OBJECTIVES

Church (especially our Canadian Bishops' statements) throughout
the diocese
- to be of service to our diocese through awareness education which
promotes action on behalf of justice
- to promote gospel values such as love, justice, a "preferential
option for the poor" and the integrity of creation
- to collaborate with other justice-oriented groups
- to express and promote solidarity with the oppressed
locally, nationally, and globally
INVOLVEMENT
-
Parenting for Peace and Justice, Canadian Catholic Organization
for Development and Peace, Catholic Rural Life Conference, Ten
Days for World Development. Ecumenical links re unemployment,
Project Ploughshares Ecumenical Farm Caucus, native concerns,
etc.
- work with the Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese of
Hamilton and parish social action committees
SERVICES
& RESOURCES
- offer help to parishes in organizing education
-action events and in establishing Social Awareness Committees.
This can lead to in-parish groups focussing on neglect
of elderly, etc.
- collaboration with solidarity groups and social justice
organizations
- resources include some A.V.'s and some books
- help in resource materials
IN SHORT: - the key words to describe the mission and action of
the
Social Awareness Office are "evangelization" and "empowerment".
-
the spiritual questions we encourage Catholics to ask are: "God
expects us to live in harmony with each other and with creation
-- what do we see in our lives that falls short of this? What
can we/I do to repair the brokenness we see?"
-
Social Awareness ultimately involves putting on the
heart, mind, and hands of Christ in order to further
God's creation on earth.
