Historic Deacon Ordinations for Hamilton Diocese

Hamilton, ON. - In an historic ceremony (on Saturday, June 10th, 2006 at 10 a.m.) 16 men were ordained the first permanent deacons in the 150-year history of the Hamilton Roman Catholic Diocese. The ordinations, by His Excellency Bishop Anthony Tonnos took place at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Hamilton.

Permanent deacons can be married and assist in a wide range of service to the Church. The ministry of deacon is similar to but different from that of a priest or bishop. A deacon is ordained to primarily minister to the needy and poor and also be a minister of the word and sacrament. Deacons are able to celebrate the sacraments of baptism and marriage.

“This is a new and positive chapter in the life of our Diocese,” says Auxiliary Bishop Gerard Bergie. “Permanent deacons will certainly play a significant role in helping to address the needs of our diocese. Unlike the transitional diaconate that applies to priests before ordination, this is a complementary and permanent role that expands the Church’s ability to serve its people by works of charity. This would include a wide range of service especially to those on the fringes of society, the sick, elderly and the imprisoned.”

Bishop Bergie noted that preparation for the permanent diaconate is demanding, requiring four years of study in courses such as theology and philosophy. “It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. It requires a great deal of commitment as well as tremendous support from family and friends both prior to and after ordination.”

He pointed out that permanent deacons have diverse backgrounds and secular careers. They must carefully balance their free time between family, employment responsibilities, charitable works and service to their parishes.

The deacon candidates’ formation studies were held at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto, as well as locally under Deacon William Rankin, Director of the Permanent Diaconate for Hamilton Diocese.

The Permanent Diaconate Class of 2006 includes: Deacons Nick Cherri, Stephen Crowley, Charles Fernandes, Philip Fernandez, Gerry Guinto, Bruce Holub, Janos Janossy, Victor Kubrak, Randy Matters, Cam Meyers, Pat Morin, Terry Murphy, Terry Osmar, Peter Pelletier, Brian Prieur and Juan Carlos Veliz.

Appointment of New Auxiliary Bishop Gerard Paul Bergie, D.D.

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI today announced the appointment of Reverend Gerard Paul Bergie, a Hamilton priest, as the Auxiliary Bishop of Hamilton. It is the Holy Father's first appointment of a Canadian bishop.
The announcement was made on the Vatican web site today at 12 noon Italian time.

Fr. Bergie, 46, will join Auxiliary Bishop Matthew Ustrzycki as an assistant to Most Reverend Anthony F. Tonnos, Bishop of Hamilton, after his ordination on August 2-4, 2005 at the Cathedral of Christ the King.

Background

Fr. Bergie, who was born and raised in Hamilton, is currently the pastor at St. Margaret Mary Parish on Hamilton mountain and Chancellor of the Diocese. He has a license in canon law and has served as a
Our Lady of Lourdes in Hamilton and St. Francis Xavier Parish in Stoney Creek.

Fr. Bergie attended St. Peter's Seminary in London and was ordained in 1984.

"We receive the Holy Father's appointment of Gerard Bergie as Auxiliary Bishop with great joyfulness," Bishop Tonnos says. "Fr. Bergie is well-liked, well-respected and very capable. He is a true leader within our faith and within our Diocese. Fr. Bergie's call to become an Auxiliary Bishop is cause for celebration."

Appointment Process

The process to appoint a bishop is initiated by the Bishop of the Diocese and carried out with the assistance of the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Luigi Ventura (the Pope's representative in Canada), who is based in Ottawa. The ultimate selection is made and announced by the Holy Father.

The Diocese of Hamilton includes 121 parishes and 26 Catholic secondary schools, and stretches from Hamilton to Tobermory, and from Oakville to Kincardine. It is the second largest diocese in English-speaking Canada.
